About Our Principal

Dear Carver Elementary Community:

I am very excited about beginning my 7th year as principal of Carver Elementary School. Last year, Carver rolled out the implementation of the STEAM instructional program at our school beginning with our TK, kindergarten, and first-grade students. This school year our second-grade students are joining the program. Every school year, a new grade level will be joining the program; our 5th-grade students will be our last group to join the program. STEAM is a collaborative, interdisciplinary, inquiry approach to learning. It enables students to see opportunities, build empathy, and create innovations with the potential to impact their world in real and powerful ways. The program also provides opportunities for students to go on field trips and engage in many activities in the many partner industries like Vertex Labs, Qualcomm, Clean Energy, Northrop Grumman, and USS Midway Museum to name a few. Last year our TK and Kindergarten students had the opportunity to visit Channel 8 news station and learn about the weather. I know our students are very excited to learn more about the STEAM program because it is a very interactive curriculum.

This school year will bring with it many opportunities for our students and parents to learn more about technology and online learning as well as to engage in standards-based quality learning activities. This year we are going to support our students and families with online learning and make every effort possible to focus on helping our students to reach academic mastery in all core content areas.
I have some exciting news to share with parents about our upcoming school year. Carver will be keeping our full-time school counselor this school year; this is an incredible benefit for our students! The support of a full-time counselor is critical to the development (socially & academically) of our students.

My continuing goal as your principal will be the ongoing transformation of Carver into one of the best quality neighborhood schools in the San Diego area. I want our neighborhood residents to know that we are open and recruiting new students. I would like for ALL of the neighborhood students to attend our wonderful school. Because of our small school size, we have distinct advantages over larger schools, namely: we have an intimate setting where teachers really get the opportunity to know their students on a close personal level. We have an extremely competent, experienced, and talented teaching staff who are dedicated to the important work of educating our students.

Carver will remain a partner with The Chollas Lake Park and our students benefit from this relationship. Students are able to learn new skills such as Archery, Fishing, and Nature Crafts from our continued collaboration with this fantastic City of San Diego Recreational Park. Carver has also entered into an agreement with The Carson Scholars Fund Inc. The Carson Fund will support The Ben Carson Reading Project. The project will provide funding to Carver to build and maintain a Ben Carson Reading Room – a warm, inviting room where students can discover the joy of independent leisure reading.

Principal's Comment

Carver Elementary is a STEAM school tucked away in a quiet southeast San Diego neighborhood. Our school was built in 1955 and it has recently undergone many upgrades such as All classrooms are fully air-conditioned, all classrooms are wireless, all students have access to technology on a daily basis, and more upgrades are presently being planned. We have excellent teachers and friendly front-office staff members. We are a school that prides itself on educating our students and helping them realize their goals. We look forward to answering any questions parents may have about our campus or our instructional curriculum. We look forward to educating all students in our neighborhood and are working towards building quality relationships with our parents in a true community fashion.
